On this interesting  tour we will get an insight into the history and architecture of the new Maxburg premises. A building, that even people who have lived in Munich for a long time might not necessarily know.

The "Neue Maxburg", which was erected after the "Herzog-Max-Burg" was destroyed during the Second World War, is one of the outstanding buildings of Germany's post-war reconstruction. In contrast to the former enclosed construction of the Wittelsbach family from the 16th century with its inner courtyards, Sep Ruf and Theo Pabst created an open construction for Munich's citizens, after having won a competition. The combination of a modern, spacious commercial and administrative new building with the preserved tower of the old "Herzog-Max-Burg" from the late Renaissance period is a prime example of how old and new can be harmonically combined and of a both independent and contextual, modern architecture.

The rhythm of the new façade was developed by the architects using the proportions of the preserved tower. The art design – fountains, sculptures, reliefs and mosaics by Josef Henselmann, Karl Knappe, Josef Oberberger, Walter Braun and others – demonstrates in an impressive way the idea of mutual heightening of art and architecture.
